Over half of internet users banking online
13 January 2010
A study has found that 22 million adults were using online banking on their main current account in the first half of 2009 - over 50% of regular internet users as a whole.
The UK Payments Administration also said that the number of people banking over the telephone had fallen, down to 14.5 million in 2009 from 16.1 million in 2005.
However, the research suggested that customers still prefer phone banking for certain tasks, such as enquiring about their account.
A spokesperson for Think Banking commented: "Online banking has proved to be a quick and convenient way for people to manage their finances. It means people can manage their finances more easily on a day-to-day basis, and there is no need to wait to speak to their bank face-to-face or on the phone."
