Car scrappage scheme `nears 290,000 registrations`
14 January 2010
Almost 290,000 new cars have been registered through the car scrappage scheme, according to the latest statistics from the SMMT (Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders).
Between May and December 2009, a total of 284,479 new cars were registered through the scrappage scheme, the report claims.
In December, the car scrappage scheme accounted for 20.9% of all new car registrations.
A car finance expert at Think Money said that the increase in sales could also be partly due to increased willingness from lenders to offer car loans.
He added: "The car scrappage scheme offers significant discounts on new vehicles, but there is still a lot of money involved, and many buyers will still rely on car finance to make the purchase.
"To bring the cost of a new car down further, we advise people buying a car on finance to speak with an expert car loans adviser about where to find the best deal."
