Cutting costs to help with debt

10 March2010

When your debts start to cause you problems, the first thing you`ll want to do is look at where you can cut back and make more room for your repayments.

You may be surprised about just how much money you could save by making a few small compromises. In some cases, you might even find you don`t have to cut back on too many luxuries - just a better-thought-out approach to your finances could help. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

Switch to a cheaper deal

Many of us pay more than we need to, simply because we never bother to check what else is on offer. Most of us are aware that we can switch to a cheaper deal on gas and electricity, for example, but how many people can say they`ve switched to a better bank account in the past few years?

It may be possible to get a better deal on a number of things you use every day - broadband, TV subscriptions and mobile phone contracts all count, too. The more things you`re paying less for, the more you`ll have left to put towards your debts.

Shop online

Shopping online can save you money in a number of ways.

Online retailers tend to be cheaper. They don`t usually have the same kind of running costs that a High Street store would have - they don`t need as many staff or premises, for example - and this is often reflected in the price.

You`ll cut out travel costs. Online retailers can offer all the variety of your nearest big shopping town, without the need to actually leave your house. Over time, the savings can really add up.

You`re less likely to be tempted. Being in the store itself, surrounded by all the things you`d like to buy, can be hard to resist - but when it`s on a screen, it`s easier to take a step back and ask yourself whether you really need it.

Take advantage of free stuff

It`s easy to forget just how much free stuff is still out there. For example, rather than buying books you could join the library; instead of renting movies you could watch the free movie channels on TV; instead of buying CDs, you could take advantage of the growing number of free music streaming services.

It`s nice to actually own these items - but if you`re trying to save money and repay your debts, it won`t hurt to `compromise` for a while.
