Cost of fuel rises by 2.12p per litre
2 April 2009
Today, 1st April, the price of petrol/diesel has risen by 2.12 pence per litre, thanks to an increase in fuel duty.
This has taken the average cost of a litre of petrol to 94.22 pence and the average price of diesel to £1.03 per litre, according to The Times.
The AA (Automobile Association) has pointed out that almost a third of all UK households have two or more cars. Two petrol cars consuming an average 1,286 litres each per year will now cost an extra £54.53 per year.
The AA, however, warns that `In just over 12 months, that could rise to more than £150 extra`.
`From 1 April 2010,` the association`s website states, `following VAT`s return to 17.5% and an `inflation + 0.5p` fuel duty rise this time next year, a further 4p a litre is likely to be added to the cost of petrol and diesel.`
"£54 per year might not sound like much," said a debt expert for Think Money, "but many families will find it difficult to find that extra pound per week. If a household needs its entire income just to keep up with its existing commitments, any additional cost can push them into debt."
