Couple avoid debt with £51 wedding

29 September 2009

A couple looking to pay around £1,000 for their special day managed to secure a full package for just £51 thanks to the auction site, eBay, the Daily Mail reports.

The couple from Telford, Shropshire, originally planned to tie the knot next year, but turned to the auction site after they were told a hotel near their home had just had a cancellation, and the package had been placed on eBay.

They decided to bid for it and managed to `win` the deal for just £51. The package included table decorations, cake stand and floral arrangement, along with a 50-person evening buffet.

The bride, Colette Palin, also found her `perfect wedding dress` on sale for half price at £450 - helping her avoid the debt some people take on in order to fund special occasions such as a wedding.

According to weddingsday.co.uk: `Depending on where you look, the average wedding cost here in the UK falls anywhere between a huge £15,000 and a staggering £25,000, with the cumulative average figure settling around the £18,500 mark`.

A debt expert for Think Money commented: "Weddings can be expensive events, and many couples start their married life paying off the debts they took on to afford their special day. This story proves that even a momentous occasion like this can be much cheaper than expected - leaving the new couple to focus on their new life together, rather than paying off debt."
