Almost three quarters of Brits `cutting back on car costs`

8 April 2009

70% of Britons are taking steps to reduce their motoring costs, according to a new report from Saga.

The research, carried out in February, found that the average motorist who has attempted to cut costs is saving £17 a month.

37% of motorists have reduced the number of miles they drive each week, while 28% are checking fuel prices before they buy. 6% have started car sharing to cut costs, and 4% have switched to cars that produce lower emissions, saving money on tax.

A debt expert for Think Money said that motoring is a good example of an area where people can cut back and lessen the burden of their debts.

"For anyone struggling with debt, cutting back where possible is essential, and motoring may be a relatively straightforward area in which to cut back.

"However, this is by no means a sure solution to a borrower`s problems. Anyone struggling to repay their debts should speak to a debt adviser to discuss the best course of action to take."
