Energy regulator Ofgem has announced new rules that will force suppliers to make their direct debit calculations more accurate, according to The Times.
The announcement comes after Ofgem reviewed direct debit arrangements of the `Big Six` suppliers, following complaints from customers about significant increases to their bills.
After last year`s price rises, many customers found that their direct debits had not changed accordingly, meaning that many fell into debt on their accounts.
A debt expert for Think Money said: "Many energy customers who fell into arrears last year will have been faced with higher bills to compensate. That can put a lot of pressure on people`s finances, and in some cases could lead to further debt problems.
"Anyone struggling to pay their energy bills, or any other essential cost, should speak with a professional debt adviser at the earliest opportunity."
