Fuel and alcohol prices to rise following Budget announcements

23 April 2009

Prices of petrol, alcohol and cigarettes are all set to rise following the Government`s latest Budget announcement.

Tax on both alcohol and tobacco has gone up by 2%, putting the average price of a pint up by 1p, according to the BBC, and adding an extra 7p to the average pack of 20 cigarettes.

Meanwhile, fuel duty is set to undergo another 2p rise from September, despite the Government ending its delay on a previous 2p rise this month.

A debt expert for Think Money said: "The additional tax may only add a small amount to each individual item, but it will add up overall, and could put extra pressure on people already stretched by the recession - particularly those in debt.

"It`s important that anyone who finds themselves struggling seeks professional debt advice as soon as possible."
