Indebted graduates without 2:1 degree will struggle to get a job
6 July 2010
According to an article in the Independent, graduates without a `top-level` degree pass will struggle to find a job this summer.
With record numbers of indebted graduates looking for employment - there are around 500,000 graduates looking this year - the majority of employers aren`t taking on candidates with degrees lower than a 2:1.
Graduates applying for jobs this summer will be going up against, on average, 69 candidates for one position - up from just 31 two years ago.
Figures show that almost eight out of 10 employers (78%) have brought in measures to only employ candidates with a 2:1 degree or higher.
A debt expert for Think Money commented: "These figures come at a time when graduates are leaving university with record levels of debt.
"If they earn less than expected, graduates - or any borrowers for that matter - will struggle to repay the debt they are carrying. We would advise anyone in this situation to seek professional debt advice before their situation can get any worse."
