One in five keep debts secret from partners

13 August 2009

According to research by Sainsbury`s Finance, nearly one in five people in debt are hiding the full extent of their financial problems from their partners, The Press Association reports.

The research found that around 19% of those questioned who have `money problems` and are in a relationship are keeping some debt secret from their other half, while 8% of their sample confessed they often fail to pay bills on time.

Head of Sainsbury`s Money Matters - a new website offering tips to help people manage their finances more successfully - Karen Horsburgh, commented that if someone is struggling with debt, then the best course of action is to "tackle any financial concerns head on and seek advice on how to start rectifying the situation."

A debt expert for Think Money commented: "Although being in debt can be a stressful time for anyone, it`s important to realise that there are ways out. In general, it`s much better for people with debt problems to face up to the issues, rather than hiding from them."
