A lack of understanding and control over personal finances is harming the wellbeing of up to 42 million UK adults, according to a report by AXA.
Almost nine out of ten adults suffer physical and psychological symptoms caused by concerns about their finances. And as many as two thirds have experienced increased stress levels in the last 12 months.
The report adds that financial worries affect low earners and high earners alike.
A debt expert at Think Money said: "Financial concerns can be an ongoing cause of stress. People will go to a doctor for medical advice or an electrician for advice on electrical matters, so it`s unfortunate that relatively few people take advantage of the vast range of financial advice on offer.
"When it comes to debt, the situation can be particularly serious. Struggling borrowers should never try to ignore debt problems - they should talk to an expert debt adviser, who can help them find a solution and put their mind at ease."
