According to a recent survey for the Royal College of Midwives (RCM), around one in five student midwives have debts of more than £10,000.

The survey, which questioned 345 student midwives, found that around two-thirds (65%) were in debt, and over a quarter (28%) were carrying debts totalling between £7,000 and £10,000, while 18% of them were carrying debts of more than £10,000.

46% of the students admitted that the `financial burden` of their studies worried them.

Cathy Warwick, General Secretary of the RCM, said: "[…] morale amongst student midwives is plummeting because of their accumulated debts and uncertainty about getting a job after graduating."

A debt expert for Think Money commented: "It is important that any borrower concerned about their debts contacts a professional debt adviser.

"An adviser will be able to assess their situation and help them identify the most appropriate way of tackling their debts."
