Over half of Britons have unsecured debts

14 July 2009

More than half of the Britons questioned in a recent survey said they each had unsecured debts totalling around £6,500, according to Guardian Group Financial.

The research claimed that 7% of people owe between £10,000 and £15,000, while 3% owe more than £30,000.

Half of the people questioned said they were concerned about how they would manage their debt, with 15% claiming they were very worried and 4% saying they were actually losing sleep over their financial situation.

29% of people said they had credit card debt because they had used their cards to pay for essentials, such as food.

A debt expert for Think Money commented: "These statistics show that many people need help managing their debts.

"Anyone who is left with little or no money after servicing their unsecured debts each month, and/or has to use their credit cards to pay for essentials, should seek professional debt advice."
