Rail companies may be forced to cut season ticket prices

9 March 2009

Off-peak and season ticket rail fares may be set to come down next year, after the Government rejected requests from rail operators to ignore the existing pricing rules.

The Government and rail companies had previously agreed a price structure in which certain rail fares would rise by 1% above the RPI (Retail Prices Index) measure of inflation each year.

If, as predicted, RPI is around -2% or -3% by July this year - the month in which the rail companies take their measure of inflation - the rules would mean that ticket prices would have to come down in January.

Any such price cut would be welcomed by commuters, many of whom were faced with 6% price increases this January.

A debt expert for Think Money said: "The large increase in rail fares this year put a lot of pressure on many commuters, who had also experienced price rises in other areas, such as energy and food.

"High season ticket prices can easily require commuters to get into debt, so any reduction in prices could make a significant - and welcome - difference to commuters` outgoings."
