UK energy bills rise four times faster than in Europe
13 January 2009
New figures have revealed that energy bills in the UK have risen more than four times as quickly as in Europe over the past year.
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) claims that average energy prices have risen by 16.7% in the UK – compared with the European average of just 3.8%.
Only Australia (20%) and Turkey (28.7%) amongst developed nations have experienced bigger price rises.
With wholesale energy costs falling for several months now, many British billpayers have felt unfairly treated by energy companies, with increasing numbers pushed towards debt by high prices.
A debt expert for Think Money said: “Energy prices have risen significantly in the past year, and it’s no surprise that increasing numbers of billpayers are experiencing debt problems or trouble paying bills.
“We advise anyone who does find themselves struggling to seek professional debt advice as soon as possible.”
