Adults aged between 18 and 34 are `leading the way` on savings, with people in this age group saving 16% more than the national average, according to Santander.
The banking group`s research found that the average Briton puts £116 aside each month, but 18-34s put aside £134 a month on average.
Meanwhile, the 55+ age group puts aside the least, with an average monthly deposit of £107.
A debt expert at Think Money said: "The statistics indicate that younger people, who are looking to secure their future, are saving the most, with the older age groups, who are more likely to have built up a reasonable savings pot already, saving the least.
"The important thing is that people make sure they are saving adequately, regardless of age. It`s important to have a reasonable amount of savings to help protect against problems with debt, and obviously the more people can save, the better."
