Housebuilder offers free insurance

Housebuilder Barratt Homes has offered some of its London homebuyers three years` free insurance in an attempt to attract new business.

The insurance cover is thought to be worth around £1,000, according to the Evening Standard. A spokesperson for Barratt Homes said that the policy would `insure buyers against being unable to make their mortgage repayments through no fault of their own`.

Barratt Homes is not the only housebuilder to offer `sweeteners` to customers, according to the Evening Standard. Property firm Ipsus is offering a £20,000 package - including one year`s paid council tax, shopping vouchers and public transport travelcards - to anyone who buys a flat in its new development in Wandsworth.

A spokesperson for Think Insure commented: "Free insurance can be a strong financial incentive for homebuyers, but we would advise people thinking about this kind of deal to consider how far the insurance stretches, whether it meets their needs, and whether it really is enough of a reason to buy a certain property. Homeowners may, for example, also want to consider contents insurance."
