Home loans rise in December

The number of home loans approved for house purchase rose in December, according to the latest figures from the Bank of England.
31,000 home loans were approved for house purchase in the final month of 2008 – a rise of around 15% from November’s figure. Their total value also rose, from £3.1 billion in November to £3.5 billion in December.
The number of remortgages, however, was down, falling from 41,000 in November to 36,000 in December. The total value of remortgages also fell – from £5.5 billion in November to £4.6 billion in December.
The total amount of outstanding secured debt stood at just over £1.223 trillion in December.
