Student loan delay continues as 30,000 left without funds
5 February 2010
Statistics released by the Government show that 7% of university students may have been affected by this summer`s delays in the student loans system, the Guardian reports.
Errors by the Student Loans Company (SLC) had left thousands of university students waiting for their loans and grants weeks after their courses began. It is thought that more than 30,000 students may have started their courses this autumn without the financial support they are entitled to.
According to provisional statistics from the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, around 50,000 students received no grant whatsoever this autumn. This - for at least 17,000 of these students - was because grants are now only available to young people whose family`s annual income is £50,020 or below.
A loans expert for Think Money said: "Students who haven`t yet received the funding they applied for may well be struggling to afford their costs - which highlights the importance of access to loans and other forms of credit.
"We would advise anyone struggling with their finances to seek professional advice as soon as they can."
