Mortgage lending from building societies rises
1 February 2010
Gross mortgage lending by building societies increased by 15% in December, compared with the previous month, according to the Building Societies Association (BSA).
Total gross mortgage lending in December last year came to £1.8 billion, up from £1.6 billion in November.
However, gross mortgage lending by building societies for the whole of 2009 stood at just £18.6 billion, compared with £37.5 billion in 2008.
A mortgage expert at Think Money said: "It`s encouraging to see an increase in mortgage lending, and this could indicate that confidence amongst lenders is continuing to increase.
"Any would-be homebuyer looking to take out a mortgage should make sure they get the best available deal. If they`re unsure where to look, an expert mortgage adviser can help."
